Chapter XV

WHEN HE GOT HOME, Mark hugged Rachel and thanked her for praying for him. Mark returned to his regular routine of working as the PR man for A New Beginning. There was never a dull moment at the shelter, and each day presented him with a new challenge. As for seeking the madman, the days ahead were a dry time for him. In a way, he probably needed this time to take a breather from chasing down a Nazi. He wondered if this so-called human being had ever reflected on his horrible deeds.

No matter how busy he was at his ministry, he never forgot the letter in the safety deposit box and the enormous task he was given to perform. He wondered, Why me, Lord, when there are so many younger men who have more stamina? Why me, Lord God? I’m not even Jewish. Then, in his inner man, he heard the voice of God. “Don’t turn your back on my chosen people. I’ll help you find him.” With this, Mark felt a new surge of energy and began to think clearly again. “I’ve got to find the fiend!” was his cry to God Almighty.

Mark was certain he was overlooking something obvious. He had to find out what it was. He called Captain Weisman at the St. Louis Police Department, and the two men renewed their brief acquaintance. “Mark, I know how determined you are to find this monster. But there is one thing you might have overlooked. Since I’m a cop, I’m always looking for clues, minor details. Sometimes these bits of evidence turn out to be what I need to solve a case. I’m going to give you some advice. You probably never thought of this. Many German companies assisted Hitler with getting the funds needed to keep the Nazi war machine going. Some of them have changed their names, but they were Nazi-owned and supported Hitler. Mark, I am determined to help you find the fiend you’re hunting for.”

“I know what you mean. I am well aware that anti-Semitism was a practice of some American companies that also supported Hitler’s slave labor camps. I may not have the education of some so-called scholars, but you can’t fool me. These American companies made money during the Holocaust and supported the death camps with their blood money. It was just like the German citizens who pretended they didn’t know what was happening in their own backyards with the death camps.”

Weisman had no idea of the extent of Mark’s knowledge about the Holocaust and the suffering of the Jewish people. “Mark, I’m going to help find this fiend. You can’t do this all on your own. I know the money you’ve been entrusted to use will be used prudently. You can’t possibly go through the files of all these companies by yourself. You need help, and that’s going to cost you money. “

Mark interrupted Weisman. “I’ll pay whatever is necessary!”

“I know a company that will do all of the searching for you.
